PALAEOHOME AND BEYOND: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE LOWER PALAEOLITHIC

Abstract:

The PalaeoHome INQUA-HABCOM project unites experts to explore multiple facets of the Lower Palaeolithic (Early to Middle Pleistocene). Here, we join with other experts to debate themes relating to: 1. What’s New in the Lower Palaeolithic? : recent discoveries; 2. Time and Space: geochronology and implications for migrations, cultural origins, transitions and endings 3. Hominins and Habitats: palaeoenvironments and landscape evolution, hominin niches, site formation and geoarchaeology; 4. Origins and Endings: cultural and technological trajectories, debating spatial variability in Oldowan/Mode 1 and Acheulian/Mode 2; 5. Behaviour and Biology: hominin behavioural variability as reflected in lithic, bone and wood technologies; experimental archaeology and other sources for analogy construction; 6. Nomenclatures: evolution of nomenclatures relating to cultural phases and tool types, and implications. 7. Public Outreach: pedagogies and policies for rescue archaeology and sustainable conservation. The outcome would seek to be published and to generate networks for comparative studies.

PALAEOHOME-PALAEOLITHIC HOMININS AND HABITATS: DEBATING REGIONAL VARIABILITY IN LOWER PALAEOLITHIC TECHNOLOGICAL STRATEGIES

Abstract:

Through PalaeoHome, an INQUA-HABCOM project we seek to stimulate debates in questions related to spatial and temporal regional variability in Lower Palaeolithic technological strategies spanning the Early to Middle Pleistocene. Recent research has led to new perspectives on models of migrations ‘Out of Africa’, that require re-examination on modes of cultural transmission and technological evolution. We invite papers on themes relating to: 1.Recent discoveries and updates from fieldwork or analysis that have contributed to providing new perspectives on this topic; 2.Discussions on spatial and temporal variability in technological changes and cultural transitions with implications for hominin migrations; 3.Hominin behavioural diversity as inferred from lithic, bone, and wood technologies, contributions from experimental archaeology and ethnographic analogy; 4.Implications of nomenclatures for describing cultural phases and tool types that influence interpretations of cultural transitions. By fostering dialogue across geographic and disciplinary boundaries, this session seeks to refine our understanding of early hominin adaptations and the complexity of Lower Palaeolithic technologies
